What will I get out of training in Urban Self Protection?
First and foremost, our job at USP is to help develop you into a ‘hard target’ with all that is at our disposal – be that verbal diffusion training, awareness and avoidance tactics, escapes from chokes and holds, or how to carry out first aid on yourself after a knife attack.
However, our students get more than just a self-defence class;
You will make new friends. You will gain confidence. You will improve your fitness. You will bust stress.
What will Urban Self Protection teach me?USP covers the following important areas of self-defence: Defensive Tactics – Striking, blocking, applying holds etc. Combinations – Striking skills used in a combination High Level Use of Force – nasty techniques for last resort fighting Take Downs – Throws and trips to take an attacker to the ground Ground Work – Ground fighting and self-defence on the ground Self-Defence – Defence against chokes and holds etc. Weapons – Defence against and defensive use of common weapons Theory – Psychology of combat and personal safety tactics Other – First aid and control and restraint methods

The syllabus and a training guide are available for those who wish to train at home on their own or with a partner.
How will Urban Self Protection help me improve?USP gradings are a great way to motivate yourself and gain useful feedback about your progress. There are 6 levels to achieve and each level offers progression in the areas mentioned above. However, we do not have a belt system as we wear regular street clothes to train in. No-one is required to attend the gradings – they are optional but those who feel they may benefit from them are welcome. Gradings are carried out several times per year and are based on 6 levels within our syllabus. Those who pass their grading receive a certificate and a coloured silicone band denoting their level.
How do I know the Instructor and system are credible?The creator of Urban Self Protection, Pete Lee, has 12 years law enforcement experience alongside the following qualifications and other relevant experience: Black Belt Instructor – Kempo Ryu Karate Kickboxing Krav Maga Instructor (IKMF) G2 Highest ranking UK Instructor (L4) for Jim Wagner’s Reality Based Personal Protection System FIST suit simulations Instructor Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Law Trainer NVQ Level 3 – Learning and Development First Aid Instructor Member of the International Police Defensive Tactics Association Pete and Urban Self Protection are both registered with the British Combat Association

How much does it cost?Your first class is absolutely FREE with no obligation to join the club. There is NO membership fee. Regular classes cost £30 per month entitling you to train every week – this works out at less than £5 per hour. The only additional cost that we recommend you bear is insurance which we can arrange for you through the British Combat Association at around £15 per year.
What equipment will I need? NONE! Although most members like to purchase their own boxing gloves, gum shield and groin guard at some point. There are no expensive uniforms or sparring equipment to purchase. We train in everyday clothes for realism – this helps to keep your costs down too! Wear something comfortable to train in at first – perhaps a t-shirt, jogging bottoms and a pair of trainers. Later we encourage you to wear something a little more restrictive such as an old pair of jeans – again to add to the realism.
